Kwahu South Municipal Assembly and Ghana Tourism Authority Collaborate to Develop Nkofieho Mystic Cave into World-Class Tourist Destination

The Kwahu South Municipal Assembly, in partnership with a team from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has taken a significant step towards transforming the Nkofieho Mystic Cave at Twenedurase into a world-class tourism destination. A meeting and site visitation exercise were held on Tuesday, 9th June 2026, to assess the location and chart a path for its development.

The engagement began with the GTA team visiting the Municipal Assembly Office for a brief meeting with management. Thereafter, the team, led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Effah Osei Bonsu David, together with the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD) and some management members, proceeded to the palace of the Chief of Twenedurase, where the cave is located, to pay a courtesy call and formally introduce the intent of the Assembly.

The visit to the Chief's palace was particularly significant, as it fulfilled a longstanding promise made by the MCE to develop the site during his tenure. Hon. Effah Osei Bonsu David used the opportunity to inform the Chief and his elders that processes had officially commenced to give effect to this commitment. He introduced the team from the Ghana Tourism Authority and formally sought the Chief's permission to access the cave for assessment. The Chief and his elders granted the request, paving the way for the team to proceed to the site.

The team then moved to the location of the Nkofieho Mystic Cave to conduct an on-site assessment. During the visit, they examined the physical features of the cave and its surrounding environment, including the Echo Ravine and the Mystic cave itself, to evaluate what would be required to uplift the site to international standards. The Nkofieho Cave, located close to the Padlock Rock in Kwahu Twenedurase in the Kwahu South District, is an ecotourism site of about 5.11 hectares in size, featuring different tree species and unique rock formations.

The cave is steeped in rich history and holds significant cultural and historical value. It served as a sacred protectorate for ancient warriors who migrated from the Asante Kingdom, providing refuge and a strategic base. Its development into a world-class tourist attraction is expected to boost tourism in the area, create employment opportunities for the youth, and contribute to local economic development.

The Municipal Chief Executive reaffirmed the Assembly's commitment to working with the Ghana Tourism Authority to realise the full potential of the Nkofieho Mystic Cave. The assessment conducted by the GTA team will inform the design and implementation of interventions needed to position the site as a premier tourist destination in Ghana.
