Hazards, disaster and security
1.9.1. Natural and man-made disasters
Climate change has brought about a dramatic change in the weather pattern in the Municipality resulting in unusual rainstorms, flash floods and bushfires which often leave in their trials destruction to livelihoods and vital socio economic infrastructure such as houses, schools, roads bridges and crops. The most common disasters in the Municipality include:
1. Flooding
2. Ripping of roofs and collapse of building by rainstorm
3. Destruction of farms by rainstorm and bushfires, locust invasion
4. Epidemics. (i.e. cholera)
The Municipality counts on scarce equipment and personnel to confront any sudden disaster. The fire department do not have adequate infrastructure such as fire hydrants. Measures set in place to prevent occurrence of the disaster in the Municipality include:
Embarking on massive tree planting to serve as windbreaks and improve the vegetative cover.
Enforcing building regulation to reduce the occurrence of indiscriminate building in risky areas or in risky conditions
Adhering to early warning systems:
1. January to March: Bush Fire Occurrence period
2. April to June: Diarrhea, Malaria peak period, flooding
3. July to September: Cholera peak period
4. October to March: Cerebral Spinal Meningitis (CSM)
1.9.2 Security
1.9.2.1 Police Service
The Municipality has a command located at Mpraeso. The number of personnel required in the Municipality given the population is 180, however, there are 42 officers currently stationed in the Municipality. The shortage of staff makes mobility to promote law and maintaining order in the Municipality very difficult.
The Municipality does not have Women and Juvenile Unit (WAJU) and therefore collaborate with the WAJU in the Kwahu West Municipal on related issues. The absence of these departments implies a high degree of vulnerability for women and children as well as general insecurity.
1.9.2.2 Fire Service
There is one Fire office station serving the whole Municipality. The number of offices however required for the efficient provision of services by the Department is two (2). The Municipal fire service collaborates with the NADMO to prevent disaster. The required number of personnel for the Municipality is 85, however, only (38) are currently at post.
